Updated April 29 at 9 a.m.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services said a minor fire at SilverCity Sudbury Cinemas Sunday that caused the theatre to be evacuated started in the janitor's room.

Platoon Chief Terry LaRocque said he doesn't know the cause of the fire.

“The fire suppression system in the building (sprinklers) extinguished the fire,” he said.

“It did its job, and there was no danger to any of the people inside of the theatre. They had some smoke problems. It took us awhile to ventilate.”

The theatre was up and running again by Sunday evening.

Updated April 28 at 5:56 p.m.: Neither Cineplex nor the Greater Sudbury Fire Service have returned messages from Sudbury.com yet as to the reason the building was evacuated earlier today, but the theatre has re-opened.

Original story

People hoping to catch a Sunday movie at the Cineplex movie theatre got a bit more action than they bargained for this morning, evacuated just before fire trucks arrived to the scene.

Local Cineplex staff wouldn't comment and a message left for Greater Sudbury Fire Services has not been returned.

Details will be released as they become available.

Sudbury.com has learned the movie theatre could be closed for the day.

Customers looking to claim a refund can do so by contacting Cineplex customer service online or by phone at (800) 333-0061.
