On April 7, the Rotary Club of Sudbury will pay tribute to a Sudbury physician and soldier, Captain Ray Wiss.

In attendance will be Canada's former Chief of Defence Staff for the Canadian Forces, retired General Rick Hillier, also known as the "soldier's soldier."

Wiss is recognized both nationally and internationally for introducing ultrasound into emergency medical practice, and has been described as being the most influential emergency physician in Canada in the past decade.

In 2007, Wiss was in Afghanistan and stationed at the front lines. He spent more time in a combat zone than any other doctor since the Afghan mission began.

His diary of experiences and e-mails were published in 2009, in "FOB Doc."

"Through his writing, Ray Wiss showed the world the toughness and professionalism of Canadian soldiers, tempered by their absolute humanity and kindness," Hillier said in the press release.

"We feel, with them and with him, their pride in being Canadian, in representing this far-flung corner of the world a country that Afghans can only fantasize about living in."

Hillier became known as the "soldier's soldier," because he chose to put the welfare of his troops before all else, explained a press release.

The event takes place April 7 at the Caruso Club. Tickets are $75 per person, and include a signed copy of FOB Doc.

Proceeds from this event go to the Rotary Foundation World Charities and the Military Families Fund.

All proceeds from the sale of the book goes to the families of fallen Canadian soldiers.
