Sudbury Green Party candidate David Robinson wrote in a press release that the Russian invasion of Ukraine could have been avoided if western countries had weaned themselves off of oil.

“If Germany and the US had weaned themselves off oil and gas they could have saved

Ukraine the agonies they are going through,” said Robinson. “This invasion would not

have happened.”

As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues, Robinson said in a press release that the US and Germany are “standing by” because of how it may impact oil prices.

“US President Biden is standing by as Russia invades Ukraine because he is afraid to

boycott Russian oil. Why? Because it will raise gas prices in the USA,” said Robinson.

“German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is standing by because he is afraid to boycott Russian gas,” the economist continued. “Why? Because it will raise German energy prices. Two of the most powerful countries in the world are standing around helplessly because they are run by the fossil fuel industries.”

Green leader Mike Schreiner also said that a harsher unified response to Russia is necessary.

“We need to get the destabilizing influence of big oil from places like Russia out of our lives. And the best way to do this is by investing in cleaner, cheaper forms of energy like renewables and by electrifying transportation and heating,” Schrenier said in the press release.

Currently the US alongside Canada, Japan, and other countries have imposed a range of sanctions on Russia. Germany also supported the restrictions on Russia from the SWIFT international payment system.
