Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) reported Friday there 72 new cases of COVID-19 in the city.  The local COVID-19 risk index is still listed as moderate, just as it was a week ago.

PHSD is also withdrawing a previously reported COVID-19 death. PHSD reported Friday that the death report — first reported on Wednesday as an unknown cause — is being removed.

That means that the death count that was reported as 170 persons since March of 2020, has now been amended to 169 persons.

Friday's health unit summary revealed there were 72 new cases of COVID-19 in Greater Sudbury. With the 107 new cases reported on Tuesday and 37 new cases reported on Wednesday, the weekly total comes to 216.

That is a drop from last Friday when the weekly total was 269, a decrease of 19 per cent.

The total number of COVID cases for the Sudbury health jurisdiction since the pandemic began in March of 2020 is 18,501. The largest number of those cases (6,243) were people in the 20 to 39 age group.

The PHSD summary also revealed there are 21 active COVID-19 outbreaks in the Greater Sudbury area. This involves outbreaks in local long-term care homes, the hospital, retirement homes and other congregate settings.

Health Sciences North is reporting 47 COVID-19 cases in the hospital, with two of those individuals in the Intensive Care Unit.

HSN is also reporting several COVID-19 outbreaks in various parts of the hospital, which includes:

  • 8 North, RLHC (declared August 23, 2022)
  • 7 North, RLHC (declared September 1, 2022)
  • 5th Floor, Kirkwood site (declared September 2, 2022)
