Two Sudbury naturalists have been honoured by a provincial conservation organization for their contributions to preserving Ontario’s natural beauty.

Dieter and Marlies Schoenefeld were awarded over the weekend. They received the Ontario Nature Achievement Award, which is given to members of the group who have made an “outstanding contribution to the activities of Ontario Nature,” the organization said in a release.

“As members and leaders of the Sudbury Field Naturalists for the past 30 years, Dieter and Marlies Schoenefeld have worked tirelessly to protect their natural surroundings,” the organization said in the release. “The couple are active citizen scientists and contributed to both editions of the Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario, as well as many other nature-related surveys.”

Ontario Nature, a leading conservation organization, honoured a total of nine individuals at its 81st Annual General Meeting and Gathering, held near Kingston at the Frontenac Arc, a nature preserve that spans 2,700 kilometres in southeastern Ontario.
