The Ad Hoc Committee to establish the Sudbury Peace Council is holding its inaugural public forum this Thursday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkside Centre.

The themes of the evening are, “Refugees Welcome”, “Sudbury is a City of Immigrants” and “No to War Within Nations and Between Nations”.

"In a time of increasing international uncertainty and turmoil, there is a need for Sudbury people to have a place to come together, calmly discuss the issues before us and find our bearings," said a news release from the Peace Council.

Thursday’s discussion will concentrate on issues relating to immigration and refugees following the election of Donald Trump in the US, his attempts to impose a travel ban and the increasing number of immigrants crossing snow-covered fields to enter Canada as a result of the Safe Third Country Act and related issues.

"We will also deal with complications that have been created in travel to the US for many Canadian citizens," said the news release.

"With the exception of First Nations people, Sudburians are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants. Together, we have built one community which recognizes unity in diversity. The Ad Hoc Committee has suggested that increased immigration could help rejuvenate our population and aid our economic growth."
