Dr. Denis-Richard Roy has been selected as the new president and CEO of Sudbury Regional Hospital (HRSRH).

Roy will begin his new duties on January 11, 2010.

A physician with a specialty in nephrology, Dr. Denis-Richard Roy was CEO of the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) from 2002 to 2008, according to a hospital press release.

Over the past 20 years, Roy has held numerous leadership positions with McGill University Health Centre, Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal Thoracic Institute and the Centre hospitalier régional de l’Outaouais.

He is currently consulting manager at CHUM.

Dr. Roy holds a Masters in Business Administration and his post-doctoral education includes an MRC Research fellow, Renal physiology from Stanford University in the United States.

He has been a member of several provincial, national and international boards including the Association of Canadian Academic Hospitals, Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation, Medical Research Council of Canada, National Steering Committee on Prevention of Accidents in Health Care Delivery, Nice-Harvard Organizing Committee and served as vice chair of the Founding Board for the Canadian Patient Safety Institute.

In 2008, he was asked to assist the State of Uttar Pradesh (India) in their planning for specialized hospitals.

“We are extremely pleased to have secured such a high-calibre candidate for the position of president and CEO,” stated HRSRH board of directors chair, Carol Hartman, in the press release.

“From the outset, we wanted to hire the best CEO for our hospital and our community. It was important for us to find a leader that would see the vast opportunities that the HRSRH has to offer. With his medical, clinical, research and teaching experience, Dr. Roy has the right leadership skills and abilities to establish the HRSRH as a premier academic health sciences centre for the north and Canada,” added Hartman.

“I am very happy to become a member of the HRSRH family. A new hospital, a new faculty of medicine, devoted employees, health professionals and physicians -- these are the ingredients that will contribute to making HRSRH one of the best university teaching hospitals in the country,” stated Roy.

Roy is married to Dr. Monique Dubois-Roy, a family physician, and they have one son.

Roy replaces Vickie Kaminski, who resigned as president and CEO of the hospital in June to assume new duties as CEO of Eastern Health in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Bertha Paulse was appointed as Interim CEO by the board and will continue these duties until January.

Roy will be meeting with the Sudbury media Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. Check back to NorthernLife.ca for coverage of this event.
