Dr. Janet McElhaney, vice president of research and scientific director for the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI), has been selected to a national advisory board for Indigenous Peoples’ health.

McElhaney is also a professor of medicine at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), and was selected from a group of more than 450 applicants to participate as a member of the Institute Advisory Board (IAB) for Indigenous Peoples’ Health for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

“I am truly honoured to have received this invitation to serve on the IAB for Indigenous Peoples’ Health”, said McElhaney. "I look forward to working with my colleagues from across the country to look at how we can improve the health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people."

The CIHR has introduced five new advisory boards to provide expertise and advice to its member institutes. Advisory board members are hand-picked for their expertise in four research areas: biomedical, social, cultural and environmental factors that affect population health.

“I want to congratulate Dr. McElhaney for being recognized for her expertise in Indigenous Peoples’ Health,” said Dr. Denis Roy, the CEO of the hospital's research arm. "She is bringing much needed focus to northern and Indigenous health issues."
