Sept. 21 marks the UN International Day of Peace with a Walk for Peace slated for Sudbury.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. at Memorial Park and head to Tom Davies Square where Mayor Marianne Matichuk is scheduled for a proclamation and observation of the Day of Peace.

The event is an annual joint initiative of the City of Greater Sudbury, the Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Arts Association and Sudbury Interfaith Dialogue.

John Arbuckle, of Sudbury Interfaith Dialogue, said in anticipation of the Day of Peace, people are encouraged by UN Secretary Ban Ki Mun to put on peace events — anything from a simple candle-lighting and meditation ceremony to a star-filled musical concert, or anything in between.

This year’s theme for International Day of Peace is Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future, according to a news release from Sudbury Interfaith Dialogue.
