Sudbury woman's Phil Kessel pic still world's best sports selfie: website

But Cleveland Indians fan takes one that comes close

A two-year-old selfie taken by a Sudbury woman still reigns as the best sports selfie of all time, says a Canadian sports website devoted to viral media.

Bardown, which is affiliated with TSN, describes itself as “a combination of viral, you-gotta-know-these sports stories, and fun, informative original stories and videos that draw from a variety of influences from around the web and the world of pop culture.”

Kristin Provincial's selfie with former Maple Leaf forward Phil Kessel took the Internet by storm in November 2014.

Kessel, who's currently playing with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup playoffs, was sitting in the penalty box during a game versus the Ottawa Senators when Provincial snapped her picture.

The challenger for the best-ever sports selfie was taken by a Cleveland Indians fan May 2. It shows the unidentified fan looking at the Jumbotron, appearing to stare back at his phone from the big screen.

“This is an awesome selfie taken by this Indians fan who somehow had the awareness to either have his camera in position and prepared or the quickness to whip it out and pull this off,” Bardown writes. “Regardless, it achieved Mt. Rushmore of selfies status and is one we surely won’t forget.”

But it still ranks behind Provincial's selfie, Bardown says.

“You may not remember it, as it was a couple years ago and this player no longer plays on the team, but at the time it was taken, this man had a mystic and aura about him,” the website said, adding, “We understand the Indians one is probably better, but we love Phil, especially Leafs Phil, so it will be tough to unseat him.”
