Sudbury.com will be carrying live coverage of tonight’s city council meeting, which includes a historic vote on the rezoning necessary to permit the Kingsway Entertainment District.

City council tonight backed a planning committee decision of two weeks ago to rezone the land and allow an official plan amendment to allow the Kingsway Entertainment District project and casino development to proceed. City hall reporter Darren MacDonald is at the meeting. Follow his live coverage on Twitter @DarrenMacD. Check back with Sudbury.com later tonight for more in-depth coverage of tonight's decision. For background: tonight’s city council meeting included a historic vote on the rezoning necessary to permit the Kingsway Entertainment District.

For the $100 million community arena, the land must be rezoned to permit a public arena – currently it's zoned for a private arena only. An Official Plan amendment is needed to allow the $60 million casino to proceed, and a rezoning is required to build a parking lot on the premises.

The planning committee approved the applications last month, but they must be confirmed by city council to become official. Opponents of the plan are already raising money to fund an appeal of the decision.

The meeting began at 6 p.m.
