École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur Grade 12 student Tyberius Newel was presented with the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE) Frank Kelly Scholarship June 13.

The Frank Kelly Scholarship, that includes a cash award of $2,500, was awarded for the first time this year to one student in each of Ontario’s four school systems.

Newel was selected on the basis of his perseverance throughout his secondary school journey despite the numerous challenges that he had to face and overcome.

Thanks to his determination, the student had much success, engendering within him the desire to help others. That desire motivated him to enrol in the social work program at Cambrian College.

“I take great pride in learning that a Nouvelon graduating student will benefit from this prestigious award that hallmarks a student’s tenacity and capability in tackling challenges,” said Lyse-Anne Papineau, director of education with Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario.

“Student success and progress are the mainstay of all that we who work in the field of education seek to accomplish. I am happy to learn that Tyberius succeeded in overcoming the many obstacles in his path and will now be moving on to post-secondary studies.”
