Well it seems the threat of a summer strike by 1,500 City of Greater Sudbury workers has been averted.

At around 1 a.m., CUPE Local 4705 issued a statement on the union's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Cupe4705/?fref=ts) saying the inside and outside bargaining units had ratified a three-year contract with the City of Greater Sudbury, though it didn't give a vote percentage.

"We are pleased to announce that both the Inside and the Outside Units have ratified a three-year contract with CGS," the statement reads. "We would like to thank everyone who made it out to vote earlier today. Also, we would like to thank our Bargaining Committee on their dedication and hard work. We look forward to continuing to serve our community!"

The vote was held on Wednessday.

Prior to the vote, Local 4705 President Darryl Taylor said a deal was reached June 23, following marathon talks involving a conciliator.

"The last night, we actually talked long after the conciliator left until about one in the morning in an attempt to get a deal," he said. "It was a challenging round of negotiations. We're very aware that we have to be responsible to the citizens and the taxpayers. At the same time, we had a number of issues that our members wanted addressed that were both monetary and non-monetary in nature."
