Health Sciences North has almost 4,000 employees and, in 2018, 291 of them made it on to the Sunshine List, the annual list of employees working for the Ontario public service who earn $100,000 or more a year.

They include doctors and surgeons, administrators, registered nurses, pharmacists, planners and other employees.

Not surprisingly, president and chief executive officer Dominic Giroux had the highest hospital salary, $342,553.96 plus $12,755 in taxable benefits.

According to Giroux’s employment contract, which is posted on the hospital’s website at www.hsnsudbury.com, Giroux’s base salary is $320,824.

The former Laurentian University president is eligible for a performance bonus of between zero and $48,124 – up to 15 per cent of his base salary — if he achieves pre-determined performance goals established by the board of directors of HSN.

It appears that Giroux earned a performance bonus of about $20,000 in 2018, his first full year on the job.

Others who joined Giroux on the Sunshine List are Dr. Andrew Knight, a general practitioner in charge of systemic treatment at HSN, who earned $273,591.73 plus $440.04 in taxable expenses; chief physicist Konrad Leszczynski, who made $203,686.56 and $500.88 in taxable benefits; former vice-president of patient experiences and digital transformation Dave McNeil at $339,631.19 and $3,029.64. McNeil left HSN late last year.

Former senior vice-president and chief operating officer Joe Pilon, who retired, earned $232,118.54 plus $467.04 in taxable benefits.
In some cases, it is not clear if HSN executives received salaries for entire calendar years or for parts of the year.

Dr. Jason Prpic, regional medical director of the Centre for Prehospital Care, was paid $232,118.54 and $467.04 in taxable benefits.

Dr. John Fenton earned $161,244 as chief of staff at HSN and Mark Hartman, senior vice-president of patient experience and digital transformation, earned $198,164.72 plus $490.56 in taxable benefits.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts medical officer of health Dr. Penny Sutcliffe earned $337,492.56 in 2018, with $7,196 in taxable benefits — only a bit less than Dominic Giroux's salary.

The associate medical officer of health, Dr. Ariella Zbar, earned $226,329, with $409 in taxable benefits last year.

A total of eight employees with Public Health Sudbury and Districts made the Sunshine List in 2018.

Sixty-one people working for the North East Local Health Integration Network are members of the $100,000-plus club.

The Progressive Conservative government of Premier Doug Ford has said it will disband the 14 LHINs in Ontario and streamline health care administration so it is managed by a super-agency.

In 2018, Dr. Paul Preston, vice-president, clinical for the LHIN, made a salary of $296,539.45 and $1,148.01 in taxable benefits; president and CEO Jeremy

Stevenson made $230,769.60 and $899.96 in benefits; and Terry Tilleczek, vice-president of strategic and system planning, earned $202,836.40 and $808.53 in taxable benefits.
