There's only one new active forest fire to report in the region.

That new fire is a relatively small burn of 0.1 hectare burning near North Bay (North Bay 22, if you're following that closely).

That brings the number of active forest fires in the region to 13.

Besides North Bay 22, the other fires and their sizes are as follows:

  • Sudbury 54 is under control at 0.7 of a hectare
  • Parry Sound 23 is under control at 0.2 of a hectare
  • Parry Sound 22 is under control at 0.1 of a hectare
  • Parry Sound 21 is being held at 0.8 of a hectareTimmins 8 is not under control at 2 hectares
  • Cochrane 10 is being observed at 1 hectare
  • Cochrane 9 is being observed at 3 hectares
  • Sudbury 30 is under control at 0.3 hectares
  • Sault Ste. Marie 21 is being held at 1.2 hectares
  • Hearst 5 is under control at 2,574 hectares
  • Hearst 4 is under control at 475 hectares
  • Wawa 7 is under control at 294 hectares

Meanwhile, Sudbury 35 is under control at 85 hectares, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is reporting. Infrared scanning continues on this fire, but fewer and fewer hotspots are being found. The ministry said in a news release that crews have made good progress and some will be released today so they may be freed up for initial attack roles.

Despite the smaller number of forest fires, the hazard remains high to extreme for areas in the central and southern portion of the region, while the north and far north regions are showing a low to moderate hazard.

On a related note, the ministry is asking UAV (drone) enthusiasts to keep their distance from active forest fires. Not only is it illegal and dangerous, MNRF said, but puts the lives of those fighting the fires at risk, causing delays, distracts and potential collisions and crashes.
