In the first COVID-19 summary of the new year from the Sudbury Health unit, two new COVID-related deaths have been reported. It brings the local cumulative death toll since March of 2020 to 196 in the jurisdiction of Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD).

It was also reported that while COVID-19 was the underlying cause in one death, this was not the case for the second death. Both deaths were reported to have occurred in Greater Sudbury.

Also reported in the year's first summary was an increase of 59 new COVID cases for a total of 21,586 cases in the past two years and 10 months. Of course, in the majority of those cases, 21,453 have been resolved in that same time period.

The majority of all the cases occurred in the 20 to 39 year age group, which accounts for 6,966 as of the first week of January.

PHSD also reported there are a number of CPVID-19 outbreaks in the wider community, mostly at long-term care homes, retirement homes and other congregate settings. Tuesday's report revealed 17 total outbreaks, with six being resolved and 11 being active.

The COVID Risk Index is set at Moderate, while the Influenza Activity Level is listed as Sporadic.

At Sudbury's Health Sciences North (HSN), the hospital reported Tuesday there were 32 cases of patients admitted with COVID-19. Four of those patients were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). HSN also reported it was coping with three disease outbreaks at the hospital, as follows:

  • Clostridium Difficile outbreak on level 5 of the South tower, RLHC (declared Dec. 28, 2022).
  • Respiratory outbreak at Amberwood Site (declared Dec. 30, 2022).
  • COVID-19 outbreak on level 7 of the North tower, RLHC (declared Jan. 3).

As a reminder, HSN advises that units where there is COVID-19 or Respiratory Outbreak will have no Designated Care Partners/Visitors. An exception may be considered for compassionate reasons or end-of-life.
