As of yesterday afternoon, there were two new forest fires burning in the region, bringing the total number of fires to five, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is reporting.

Not under control, Sudbury 23 is 0.2 hectares in size and is burning north of Capreol. The other new fire, also not under control, is Bancroft 3 at 6.9 hectares and burning southeast of Algonquin Park.

The northern reaches of the region are at a relatively low risk of fire, the MNRF says, while the areas of most concern are the south and southeast portions of the region.

The three other active burning in the northeast remain unchanged from yesterday. Hearst 4 and Hearst 5, the largest fires, are being held at 475 and 2,574 hectares, respectively.

Wawa 7 is not under control and is burning 294 hectares, but there has been no significant growth in the fire for the past few days.
