Despite the poor economy, local union members are still keen to ante up for the needy.
Members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) donated $1,500 and enough food to fill two vans for the Sudbury Food Bank Thursday in front of the provincial building.
“These contributions will help meet the increased demand food banks face during this holiday season and these tough economic times. Times, when some of the less fortunate members of our community and even some members of our family, need to rely on the generosity of others,” said Normand Pilon, OPSEU mobilizer.
“Whether it is food or money, 100 per cent of what is donated goes out to help other people. Few charities do this, but we are very fortunate this way,” said Geoffrey Lougheed, chair of the board of the Sudbury Food Bank.
Lougheed said 10,000 people are in need of the services of the Sudbury Food Bank and its member agencies every month.
“You may never meet any of these people yourself, but your support is appreciated by them,” said Lougheed.
Dan Xilon, Sudbury Food Bank director, said the Christmas food drive is coming along well.
“It is just fantastic. Sudbury is unique. People here know tough times are coming but they know they give a little now before the city really gets hit hard. They are doing what they can for others,” said Xilon.
