“Our United Way campaign has become a very proud tradition at Vale, and showcases how generous and caring our employees are,” Jon Treen, general manager, mining & milling of Vale’s Ontario Operations, said in a joint press release from the company and union.

“I am very proud of all of our people and their willingness to dig deep when it counts to help those in need.”

“The United Steelworkers Local 6500’s membership continues to show their generosity, compassion and commitment to the United Way/Centraide to improve the quality of life for the people in our community,” Rick Bertrand, president of United Steelworkers Local 6500, said in a press release.

Vale’s employee contribution-matching program this year matched one dollar for every dollar contributed by an employee.

Pensioners, contractors and funds raised from special events also contributed to the overall campaign total.

United Way Sudbury announced last week it had surpassed the $1.75 million fundraising goal it had set for 2011, raising more than $1.94 million.

“We are overwhelmed by the amount of support we have received from the Vale/USW Campaign this year,” Jeanne Warwick, chair of United Way Sudbury's 2011 campaign, said.

“It has been such a pleasure working with their team. They have made great strides for our community and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
