Vermillion Lake Road, between Chelmsford and Dowling, is number two on the CAA's list of worst roads in the province.

The road, which serves cottagers and permanent residential homes on Vermillion Lake, is a regular on the CAA list, and came first in the past. The list was released Oct. 18.

But unlike past years, the CAA also polled people about the province's best roads. Three Greater Sudbury roads — Hwy 144 bypass, Falconbridge Road, and Hwy 69 — came in 12th, 18th and 19th place.

Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci commented on Hwy 69 making the best roads list.

“This (highway) used to be a notoriously unsafe road that claimed far too many lives — it is now considered one of the top 20 best,” he said.

Roads in poor repair are trouble for motorists, the CAA noted.

“Hitting potholes and consistently driving on poorly maintained roads throws out wheel alignment and diminishes the tread on tires, making it harder to steer in bad weather,” the website of the CAA said.

Over 350 fatalities and 25,000 injuries can be directly related to to poor roads, the CAA continued, referring to information from Transport Canada.
