April 10-16 was officially proclaimed National Victims of Crime Awareness Week in the city by Mayor Marianne Matichuk April 7.

The theme of this year's awareness week is Many Voices, Many Paths, which recognizes that victims of crime come from all walks of life, including all cultures, religions, ethnic backgrounds, economic statures, handicaps or sexual orientation.

A kickoff of the week, organized by the Greater Sudbury Coalition to End Violence Against Women, was held at Tom Davies Square April 7.

The coalition works towards eliminating social, political, systemic and economic conditions that perpetuate violence against women, while respecting the special needs of children and men survivors.

It is committed to ensuring that services are accessible by supporting existing resources, identifying gaps and promoting prevention through education and awareness.
