A recent outbreak of an antibiotic-resistant virus called Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) closed the eighth floor of Sudbury Regional Hospital's Laurentian site to visitors last month.

VRE is considered to be dangerous because it cannot be controlled with antibiotics, and it causes life-threatening infections in people with compromised immune systems – the very young, the very old, and the very ill.

Only a few were infected with the virus, and the outbreak has now been constrained, said hospital chief of staff Dr. Chris McKibbon. Two people remain in isolation, he said.

“The quarantine and the precautions that were undertaken have been effective,” he said.

“The quarantine has been lifted. We have a good strategy to review the episode to make sure there was nothing we could do better.

"We've either met or exceeded all of the provincial guidelines for this. We'll be looking at things that we can do better with quality assurance and infection control.”
