Voisey's Bay's Local 9508, Vale Inco prepare to talk

Representatives from Vale Inco and United Steelworkers Local 9508 in Newfoundland and Labrador will meet with a province-appointed conciliator May 25-26 and try to work out their differences, a Vale Inco spokesperson confirmed May 20.

The strike at Voisey's Bay has about 130 Vale Inco employees on strike, Bob Carter said. Carter is the manager of public affairs in Voisey's Bay.

"Meetings have been scheduled," Carter confirmed. "Those meetings were initiated with a request from the Steelworkers, which we have agreed to."

Carter would not discuss the specifics of the meeting. Local 9508 members have been on strike since Aug. 1.

Steve Ball, Vale Inco manager of corporate affairs in Greater Sudbury, said there are no new talks scheduled between Vale Inco and Local 6500 and 6200 representatives here in Ontario.

Members of Local 6200 in Port Colborne and Local 6500 in Greater Sudbury have been on strike since July 13.
