Volunteers clean up Louis Street and surrounding area

Clean-up aims to reverse stigma tied to the Flour Mill

A dozen members of the Louis Street Association got their hands dirty Saturday to join the city-wide community clean-up.

It was the fourth annual community clean-up for the small association in the Flour Mill.

“This is part of our community engagement and development,” said Elizabeth Davis, who organized the community clean-up.

Many children from the community had their garbage bags at the ready to pick up as much trash as they could carry.

Davis said the first year they filled around 50 garbage bags, and in subsequent years the count has varied between 20 and 30 bags.

“There were some issues with needles the first year,” she said. But needles have been less prevalent more recently.

Davis added the day is a good opportunity the showcase the hard workers in the community, and reverse the stigma associated with the Flour Mill area.

“We just want the community to know there are a lot of really hard working people here,” she said.

A few employees with Greater Sudbury Plumbing also helped with the clean-up.
