Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) reported Friday there were two new COVID-19 related deaths in the local health jurisdiction. One case categorized COVID-19 as the underlying cause of death. In the second case, COVID contributed to the death but was not the underlying case, said the health unit.

Both deaths occurred in Greater Sudbury. These are the first two deaths reported in October. Since the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020, the total number of COVID related deaths is 177.

Also in Friday's summary, PHSD said there were 93 new COVID-19 cases in the Greater Sudbury area.

The health unit reported 100 new COVID cases on Tuesday (Monday was a statutory holiday).

There were 61 new cases reported on Wednesday.

It brings the weekly total of new COVID cases to 254.

That's down from the weekly total of 362 cases reported here last Friday.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in Sudbury there has been 19,653 cases reported. The majority of those cases — 19,322 — have been resolved. As of Friday, there were still 331 active COVID cases being monitored locally.

In terms of demographics, the majority of local cases (6,521) in the past two and a half years have been individuals in the 20 to 39 age group.

The Sudbury health unit reported there are currently 16  COVID-19 outbreaks in local long-term care homes, retirement homes and other congregate settings. This includes two active outbreaks at the Sudbury Jail.

At Health Sciences North on Friday, there were 51 confirmed cases of COVID. This included three patients in the Intensive Care Unit. The hospital also reported it is also monitoring five active outbreaks as follows:

Level 8 of the North tower, RLHC (declared Oct. 4)

Level 5, Kirkwood (declared Oct. 10)

Level 4 of the South tower, RLHC (declared Oct. 11)
