Weekly update: 96 new COVID cases – no new deaths

Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) has reported an increase of 96 new COVID-19 in the Greater Sudbury area. With 99 cases reported on Wednesday and 165 cases reported on Monday, the weekly total of new cases was 362.

No new deaths were reported this past week. The current number of deaths since the pandemic began is at 175. That has not changed since Sept. 28, according to the health unit summary.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in Sudbury there have been 19,399 cases. The majority of those cases — 19,068 — have been resolved. As of Friday, there are only 331 active COVID cases being monitored locally.

In terms of demographics, the majority of local cases (6,468) in the past two and a half years have been individuals in the 20 to 39 age group. 

The Sudbury health unit reported there are currently 14 local COVID-19 outbreaks in local long-term care homes, retirement homes and other congregate settings. This includes two active outbreaks at the Sudbury Jail.

At Health Sciences North on Friday, there were 40 confirmed cases of COVID. This included one patient in the Intensive Care Unit. The hospital reported it is also monitoring two relatively new active outbreaks:

  • COVID-19 outbreak on level 8 of the North tower (declared October 4, 2022)
  • COVID-19 outbreak on level 4 of the North tower (declared October 7, 2022)

The health unit also reported that the local COVID-19 Risk Index is still at High, as it has been that way for more than a week.
