More than 68 per cent of COVID-19 cases in Ontario and 79 per cent of those in Northern Ontario have reportedly recovered from the virus, the latest provincial update states.

The most recent cases in the region were reported by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU), after one employee of a local long-term care facility, a resident of a neighbouring First Nation community, and an elderly woman who has since been hospitalized, tested positive for the virus.

TBDHU has reported the most cases in the region to date with a total of 74, 53 of whom live within Thunder Bay and the surrounding area, seven reside within district communities, and 14 are residents of nearby First Nation communities. Of these cases, 55 have recovered and one has died.

The only update to regional COVID-19 statistics aside from those three cases were two resolutions logged by Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD). With this latest report, there have now been a total of 257 cases, 204 resolutions and seven deaths confirmed in Northern Ontario, following the testing of 17,745 people.

PHSD is aware of 4,192 tests conducted in the area as of May 2 at 5 p.m., leading to 59 confirmed cases, 48 recoveries and two deaths.

This has contributed to a provincial total of 17,553 cases, 12,005 resolutions and 1,216 deaths since the start of the pandemic, up 434, 615, and 40 respectively since Saturday’s report.

A total of 327,505 tests have been conducted in Ontario as of May 3 at 10:30 a.m., 300,167 of which have come back negative.

Of the 5,548 active cases across the province, around 18 per cent (1,010) have been hospitalized in relation to the virus, 232 in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 174 in ICU on a ventilator.

Health Sciences North has not yet updated its report of COVID-19 hospitalizations since May 1, the most recent update stating that there are two confirmed cases currently in the ICU, two unconfirmed cases in the ICU and four unconfirmed cases in the care of other departments.

There is no running tally available online of any outbreaks at hospitals but there are currently 170 active outbreaks at long-term care (LTC) homes across Ontario, with four added Saturday.

These outbreaks have resulted in 2,719 active cases among residents or patients and 1,594 active cases among LTC staff. Of those who have contracted the virus, 954 residents and less than five employees have lost their lives as a result of infection.

Four LTC homes in Sudbury are in the process of managing a COVID-19 outbreak after six employees and four residents tested positive for the virus. One resident of St. Joseph’s Villa, has since passed away.

There have been 59,378 cases confirmed in Canada as of May 3 at 4:31 p.m., including 24,567 resolutions and 3,681 deaths.

Across the globe, 3,356,205 cases have been confirmed, including 238,730 deaths in 215 countries, areas and territories as of April 3 at 6:45 p.m.
