Sudbury MPP Jamie West is taking on a new role with the New Democrats.

Leader Andrea Horwath named several new critics today. She named West the critic for northern infrastructure, transportation and roads, which is an entirely new portfolio for the party.

“In my new role, I will fight for northern road maintenance to make our highways safe for families, for more transportation like the Northlander to connect Northeastern communities, get the expansion of our highways finished, and bring broadband to all northern communities,” said West.

Horwath also named Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha as critic for tourism and northern development. Timmins MPP Gilles Bisson was named critic for community safety and correctional services.

MPP France Gélinas continues in her role as health critic, while Temiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof continues as deputy leader and critic for agriculture and food, and rural development, and Muskegowuk-James Bay MPP Guy Bourgouin remains critic for Francophone affairs.

Also unchanged in his role is Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa, who continues as critic for Indigenous and treaty relations. Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Judith Monteith-Farrell remains critic for natural resources and forestry, but will also now be responsible for the mining sector.
