Sudbury Performance Group presents New Year’s Comedy Night, Dec. 31

Laugh in the New Year Dec. 31 at Trevi Bar & Grill with three fantastic comics, plus an All-You-Can-Eat buffet. Starring Darren Frost, Simon Rakoff and Dave Martin. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. and showtime at 9:30 p.m. Tickets $100, or $125 for premium seats. SSO and Waubgeshig Rice performance, Jan. 7 

In collaboration with Sudbury Theatre Centre, the Sudbury Symphony has prepared a reading with music on Jan. 7, 2023. Come to hear Waubgeshig Rice read excerpts from his award-winning book “Moon of the Crusted Snow” and listen to the Sudbury Symphony String Quartet, as they interpret the various phases of Waub’s story. The show runs at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at Sudbury Theatre Centre. Tickets are available online here.

Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon high school info nights, Jan. 10-12

Grade 8 students and parents are invited to take part in the open house events for all French-language Catholic secondary schools of the Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon Jan. 10 to 12. Local events take place at Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury) Jan. 10, École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford) Jan. 11, École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (Val Caron) Jan. 11 and École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury) Jan. 11. GNO presents Nouveau Louvre, Until Jan. 13 

The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario is pleased to present the Nouveau Louvre 2022, a holiday art sale. The Nouveau Louvre is a non-juried exhibition, community art sale and annual fundraiser. It is an opportunity to bring the Sudbury arts community together to promote local art practices. The works of the Nouveau Louvre will be on view in the gallery and online at the GNO website. The sale began Nov. 26, and will continue through until Jan. 13. This will allow those who have received a gift certificate to purchase a piece after the holidays. STC/YES 2023 Season Auditions, Jan. 23, Jan. 27 with callbacks on Jan. 29

Cinéfest presents screening of “Tempête (Ride Above)”, Jan. 25

Cinéfest Sudbury has unveiled the first film screening for its 2023 Red Carpet Patron Program. The film “Tempête (Ride Above)” is a French family drama that screens at SilverCity Sudbury on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now with limited availability at Cinefest.com, at the Cinéfest box office (40 Larch St., Unit 103), or by calling 705-688-1234. Red Carpet Patron Program passes for 2023 are now available to purchase at Cinefest.com/rcpp.

TNO presents Garcon!, Jan. 26-28

In a classic French restaurant, three waiters live through their customers’ misadventures and discussions, where humour meets drama and philosophy flirts with folly. At each table, different clients pull us into their intimacy, all under the watchful eyes and ears of our waiters who serve as discreet witnesses. Based on the web series of the same name by Stéphane E. Roy, this play presents different scenarios where the customer isn’t always king! Four shows running at Place des Arts Jan. 26-28. Volunteers needed for Safe Ride Home, throughout holiday season 

After a two-year hiatus due to COVID, Safe Ride Home Sudbury is again offering to get you home safely from holiday parties. As valuable and worthwhile as the service is, though, it needs volunteers to function. People can volunteer solo, with friends, and family or organize a group from their workplace. Anyone interested in applying or looking for additional information can do so online at SafeRideHomeSudbury.ca.

Centre Club d’Âge d’Or de la Vallée, January activities

Mondays café, card games, exercises, dinner, knitting. Tuesdays line dancing and pocket games. Wednesdays yoga and paper tole. Thursdays beading. Fridays line dancing. A community dinner takes place Jan. 9 (cost is $12), the regular meeting is Jan. 11, a dinner featuring amateur musicians takes place Jan. 19, a wine and cheese takes place Jan. 22 and an amateur musician night takes place Jan. 30. Sudbury Music Festival registrations, open until Jan. 31 

If you have lamented the loss of live music, the 2023 Sudbury Music Festival, formerly the Kiwanis Music Festival of Sudbury, will be held from March 25 to April 5. After two years of COVID-19 precautions and restrictions limiting the festival to virtual activities only, participants will once again have the opportunity to gather in person and experience each other’s performances live, carrying on a 76-year tradition. The majority of Sudbury Music Festival participants will perform and receive feedback face-to-face with their adjudicator. School choirs, bands and other large ensembles will have the option to submit video recordings for adjudication or perform in-person. Registrations for the festival are open now though Jan. 31. Sudbury Theatre Centre PA Day Camp, Feb. 3

Exploration and fun are the key words for Sudbury Theatre Centre’s PA Day Theatre Camps for youth ages eight to 12. Remaining dates for this school year include Friday, Feb. 3; Friday, March 10; Friday, April 28 and Friday June 9. The program includes collaborative activities and games designed to build imagination, confidence, and creative expression. Visit sudburytheatre.com/youth for more information and to register.

Rainbow board high school info nights, January and February 

Grade 8 students and their parents/guardians are invited to in-person Information Nights at Rainbow District School Board secondary schools in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin Island. All students are welcome to participate, regardless of which elementary school students currently attend. Grade 6 students are welcome in secondary schools that offer Grades 7 and 8. Upcoming local information nights include: Sudbury Secondary School Jan. 11, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School Jan. 12, Chelmsford Valley District Composite School Jan. 18 and Lasalle Secondary School Feb. 15. Art Gallery of Sudbury new exhibitions, Now open

The Art Gallery of Sudbury’s new exhibitions are now open to visitors. Gallery One features “‘Blazes Along the Trail’: Exploring David Milne’s Imaginative Vision,” a new major exhibition of works by David Milne, circulated by Art Windsor-Essex and curated by Christopher Finn. This exhibition presents a selection of works from core areas of Milne’s artistic practice in oil painting, watercolours, and dry-point prints. You can catch the exhibition until March 19. There are also three other exhibitions showing at the Art Gallery of Sudbury concurrently with this exhibition: “The Spaces In-Between” (stairwell and Gallery Two, on display until March 19, 2023), “Frank M. Stark: The Budd Car Train from Sudbury to White River” (Gallery Two, on display until Jan. 29, 2023), and “Creative Kids” (Gallery Three, on display until Jan. 29, 2023). The gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Holiday closures for the gallery are as follows: closed Sunday, Dec. 25 – Tuesday, Dec. 27, open Wednesday, Dec. 28 – Saturday, Dec. 31, and closed Sunday, Jan. 1 – Monday, Jan. 2. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
