R. H. Murray Public School hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony June 19 to mark the official opening of its new play structure and outdoor classroom.

“The R.H. Murray play structure and outdoor classroom is a shining example of the good things that can happen when the school and the community work together towards a common goal,” said Rainbow District School Board chair Doreen Dewar, in a press release.

“I commend the school and the sponsors for spearheading and supporting this important initiative that will have a positive impact on the children of the area for years to come.”

The play structure, donated by KGHM International Ltd., features slides, a teeter-totter and climbing equipment. The students use the versatile structure during recess and physical education time. It is also used beyond the regular school day. The school playground is a community hub for sporting activities such as soccer and baseball.

The outdoor classroom, dedicated to the memory of teacher Sheila Manninen, consists of bench seating for an entire class and an easel for teacher use. The outdoor classroom is covered by a large gazebo, which was donated by the Whitefish Lions Club. Flower boxes surround the area, making it an inviting space for teaching and learning.

“Sheila Manninen was an exemplary educator who inspired children to do their very best,” said principal Cathy Nursall.

“She was also a strong advocate of the Whitefish community, making this outdoor classroom an ideal tribute to honour her memory.

“We are thrilled to provide our students with a fun, safe place to play and learn. We thank our donors for making this possible for the students of R.H. Murray Public School. We appreciate their contribution to the education and well-being of all children in the surrounding community.”

R.H. Murray Public School is located at 3 Henry St. in Whitefish.
