A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Greater Sudbury and the surrounding area in anticipation of strong winds, heavy snow and icy conditions throughout Saturday.

Snow beginning in the morning will continue throughout the day, coupled with periods of heavy snow overnight.

Total snowfall amounts between 20-30 cm possible in many areas.

Patchy freezing rain and ice pellets are also expected, particularly over the eastern section of the region.

Motorists are advised that northeast winds gusting 60 km/h are likely to whip up freshly fallen snow, creating low to nil visibility in areas with minimal tree-coverage.

If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult said Environment Canada in a weather statement.

"Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions."
