Sudbury will be hosting the 30th annual Take Back the Night march Thursday evening, at the Steelworkers Hall on Frood Road.

Every day women are intimidated, harassed, stalked, assaulted and abused, often at the hands of an intimate partner.

“As a society, we cannot and must not tolerate this violence,” Rose Menard, executive director of the Sudbury Women's Centre wrote in a press release.

“We must recognize and address the root causes of violence against women and the underlying issues of power and control.”

Take Back the Night is a profound symbolic statement of our community to stopping the tide of violence against women and children, the press release stated.

It is an opportunity to educate the public and community about violence, to bring the community members together in protesting the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours that perpetuate this violence, and to empower women with the ability to walk together at night, unprotected and unmolested.

This year's theme is “Surviving our HerStories.”

The rally and speakers will begin at 7 p.m. with the march beginning at 8 p.m. Women, girls, and boys under 12 years are invited to attend. Free pizza and refreshments will be served.
