Workforce planning recognizes local employers

Stellar Awards go to businesses that help local students

Workforce Planning Sudbury and Manitoulin recognized eight local businesses Nov. 29 for their dedication to training and mentoring students.

Local schools, colleges and training centres nominated the businesses for the 2016 Stellar Awards, which recognize a dedication to experiential learning.

“It's a win-win. The student learns about acumen of working in a workplace, getting to work on time, what the expectations of an employer are,” said Reggie Caverson, Workforce Planning Sudbury and Manitoulin's executive director. “And on the other side the employer gets a chance to give back and also train a future workforce as well.”

Stellar Awards went to Tony Jurgilas, of 50 Carleton; Kate MacDonald, of the OSPCA; Marc Dubreuil, of Crosstown Chevrolet Buick Cadillac GMC; Home Depot; Louise Hawes, of LiUNA Local 493; Shawanosowe School; Espanola Hospital and Health Centre; and Cambrian Truck.

Caverson said the employers represent a large range of sectors, from transportation to health care and construction.

“They're not the only employers that do this,” she added. “There are a lot that do this kind of experiential learning, but just not enough of them are doing it.”
