Young people making their way through the downtown Rainbow Centre on the afternoon of July 3 may have walked out with a job.

The Sudbury Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) held a Youth Fair to help link students with employers.

Approximately 13 organizations were on hand to take resumés and provide applications, as well as to  inform youths about their businesses, said Kristy Luopa, lead youth services officer with SCCY. McDonald's representatives hired some people on the spot.

Other businesses on location included Topper's Pizza, Kentucky Fried Chicken, L'Arche, Levert Personnel, Job Connect and Volunteer Sudbury.

“The turnout has actually been pretty good this year,” Luopa said. “We've had a lot of students in.”

“It's a great opportunity for youth to network with employers. Not only can they drop off their resumé and apply, it's just a good experience to have that experience of talking to an employer. For a lot of them it's their first time doing so.”

Even though, the Volunteer Sudbury booth was not offering employment, it was an important part of the job fair.

“For younger people who do not have a lot of experience, it's great for them to get some volunteer experience under their belt,” Luopa said.

The SCCY provides young people, from ages 15 to 30,  with workshops, interview advice, resumé building, job search strategies and more. The centre also provides employers with a location to post  available jobs.

Employers interested in the service or youth in search of employment can visit the SCCY from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Rainbow Centre, located within YMCA Employment Services. The centre, which is only open for the summer, can be reached by phone at 674-9698, or by fax at 674-3236.
