Sudbury.com is kickstarting a new social media presence

Follow us on socials to keep up on the latest

After a hiatus on Instagram and Twitter, and other socials, Sudbury.com wants to kick it up a notch.

Sudbury.com strives to help provide the community with a voice, from promoting local events and charitable causes to cover the news and views of Sudburians, we want to expand your opportunities to connect with the stories we share and with each other as neighbours.

At the same time, we want our social media platforms to be safe spaces for people to connect with each other and voice their opinions. We want to hear the people and be the voice for the people — in a curious, respectful and tolerant way, free from toxic conversations and misinformation.

We eliminated comments on Facebook about a year ago. While the move wasn’t universally popular, it was necessary. Sudbury.com had been moderating comments on both Facebook and the website.

Moderating isn’t an enjoyable activity, but because we do allow comments we are legally liable for the things people say, which forces us to remove toxic comments, insulting comments, misinformation and more.

Since we are a small news team, it was not the best use of our resources to be monitoring comments on two platforms, which is why we dropped comments on Facebook.

Now, we want to try something new on Facebook. We want to open up the comments to a “conversation of the day” post on our page. These posts will allow followers to comment and share their opinion on any story or topic that we choose for the day. Of course, these posts will still be moderated.

On our Instagram, we want to post about stories you might have missed if you are not subscribed to our daily newsletter. We also want to show more of the “Behind The Scenes” of how we piece together some of our stories so stay tuned to see some of our reporters on the field.

Through TikTok, we want to start uploading short one-minute stories explaining big stories or summarizing some stories our viewers might have missed throughout the week. We’ll be able to share the same one-minute videos we make on TikTok, on Instagram as well.

Comment below which social media platform you are most active on! We look forward to engaging with you all.
