More education is needed for Sudburians when it comes to the importance of protecting our water, says Ward 10 candidate Denis Ferron.

In a news release, Ferron says he's a small water treatment plant operator and understands the importance of water treatment and the quality of our drinking water sources around the region.

“The Province of Ontario has some of the best training and highest standards for water treatment in the world,” he writes. “It is important to educate the citizens on the simple basics of water protection to fully appreciate and protect this valuable resource for future generations.

To balance the need for development and protecting the environment, Ferron says businesses should be directed to build on rocky areas of the city.

“We are fortunate to have solid rock in a majority of the boundaries in our city,” he writes. “I would encourage  development in those areas and leave the fragile ecosystem alone and protected. A foundation on rock is always a better foundation so we should encourage those areas for development.”

The Province of Ontario has some of the best training and highest standards for water treatment in the world. It is important to educate the citizens on the simple basics of water protection to fully appreciate and protect this valuable resource for future generations.

Development in Sudbury is essential, as well as protection of the environment. We are fortunate to have solid rock in a majority of the boundaries in our city. I would encourage  development in those areas and leave the fragile ecosystem alone and protected. A foundation on rock is always a better foundation so we should encourage those areas for development.

Our parks and natural areas are for our use and therefore we must have community involvement and have a committee of local citizens to help in creating a sustainable plan for the needs of the citizens and help service and protect these areas. Once destroyed, they are gone forever.

The city must protect the rich areas of agriculture, a weekend farmer’s market with local product available. Close the downtown every weekend in the summer like we do at ribfest and have a huge market. Fresh local produce tastes much better and encourages all to eat healthier

Community involvement is needed to solidify a relationship with council and restore faith in our municipal government, who elected by the community as their voice on issues. A community action network that can meet and discuss the issues will definitely improve this. Great ideas need to be heard, a good leader can always put these ideas and suggestions to good use.

We should encourage citizens to shut off their vehicles and not idle, look at drive-thru restaurants and see if there is a way to reduce wait times, reprogram stop lights at night in non-busy traffic areas to be four-way stops to keep traffic flowing when volume is down. Consultation with experts in this field and to educate the public on good environmental practices.
