MONTREAL — Quebec provincial police are investigating the death of a newborn baby in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., south of Montreal.

Provincial police spokeswoman Sgt. Valerie Beauchamp said municipal police were called to a residence in the city around 6:30 a.m. this morning.

She says police found an inanimate newborn, who was transported to hospital, where the baby was declared dead.

Beauchamp says provincial police have taken over the investigation to determine the circumstances of the death. An autopsy will also be conducted.

She says it's too early to say whether the death was criminal.

Beauchamp says a mobile police command post is at the scene and that police are continuing to gather information.
