Seven youths are custody after cruising around the Kingsway area in a stolen vehicle early Saturday morning.

Around 4:30 a.m., officers spotted a vehicle, which had just been reported stolen. After stopping the vehicle, the driver instantly took off running. At the same time, another occupant of the vehicle took the driver's position and sped off.

Officers engaged in a short pursuit, lasting less than half a kilometer, before the stolen vehicle lost control and collided with a traffic light standard. The vehicle rolled over as a result. The damage to the vehicle - a 2003 Toyota 4Runner - was extensive and the traffic control post was knocked off its base. The total damage is estimated at more than $25,000.

At the time of the accident the vehicle was occupied by six youths. These six occupants - two males and four females, along with the initial young male driver who fled on foot - were arrested without incident.  Despite the spectacular appearance of the accident, no one was injured.  All seven are in custody and are awaiting a bail hearing.

All seven have been charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property. The initial driver was charged additionally with driving without a license. The male driver involved in the collision has also been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, breach of recognizance and breach of probation.
