UPDATE - Dec. 15, 10:03 a.m.

The 61-year-old passenger in the Pontiac Sunfire, Linda Fogg of Evansville Ont., involved in an accident on Manitoulin Island on Sunday, Dec. 13, died from her injuries at St. Joseph's hospital. The 51-year-old driver remains in critical condition.

Original Story

Two women are in the hospital with major injuries after an accident involving a car and a snowplow on Sunday, Dec. 13 around 10:45 a.m.

The accident, which happened near M'Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island, occurred after the 51-year-old driver of the car lost control of her Pontiac Sunfire in a slushy section of road and spun into the opposite lane. A snowplow was plowing and sanding the road at that time.

The car struck the plow's blade and then spun into a ditch, suffering extensive damage at the rear of the vehicle where it struck the plow, and at the front where it struck the ditch. The driver and a 61-year-old woman, who was the passenger in the car, had to be extracted by emergency crews.

Both occupants were taken to the Mindemoya hospital, where they were airlifted to Sudbury. The 61-year-old woman remains in intensive care with life-threatening injuries, and the driver is in critical condition with major injuries.

Highway 540 was closed for seven hours while the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated. The highway has reopened, but investigation into the accident continues.
