Officers assigned to the Rural Squad of the Greater Sudbury Police Service were patrolling the Hanmer area on all-terrain vehicles on Sunday July 15, said a news release.

At approx. 2:10 pm, they observed a group of four ATV’s stopped on the side of the road and approached them with the intent of doing a traffic stop.  It is alleged that all four operators of the quads recognized police and drove off.  One of the ATV’s stopped a short distance away and was dealt with – he was issued a Provincial Offence Act notice for Unlawfully drive off-road motor vehicle on highway.

Officers were able to locate the other riders later in the day and all three were issued Provincial Offence Act summons for Escape by flight, Careless driving and Unlawfully drive off-road motor vehicle on highway (all charges under the Highway Traffic Act).  The fine for Escape by flight ranges from $10,000 to $25,000 and / or 6 months in jail.

The individuals involved range from 17 to 23 years of age.

Reminder:

Off-road vehicles are not permitted on a highway, as defined in the Highway Traffic Act.
