The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding snow machine operators to exercise caution when out on the trails.

Last year, eight people were killed in snow machine accidents in the northeast. The OPP said the sudden impact of high-speed collisions and the possibility of open-water incidents leave riders little in the way of a second chance. Speed and alcohol most often prove to be a deadly mix.

"Riding responsibly is a personal choice that must be made ever time someone starts up their machine," said Insp. Gerry MacPherson, unit commander of the OPP's northeast highway safety division, in a release.

"Snowmobile operators must use common sense exercise caution and slow down. It could be a life or death decision."

The OPP advises operators to slow down and see obstacles hidden by the snow like trees and branches on the trail, snow grooming equipment, wildlife and oncoming sleds and other trail users.
