Last week an Ontario Provincial Police officer stopped a vehicle in Morrisburg Ontario, near Cornwall, for speeding. The officer located several debit card skimming devices in the vehicle.

Greater Sudbury Police are now reminding the public to be vigilant when using their debit cards at ATM machines.

Skimming occurs when a suspect adds a cover over top of the swiping component of an actual debit machine. This cover registers the card?s numbers. In order for the suspect to successfully gain access to your account, they will need this number but they will also require your PIN number.

Police recommendations:

- When using debit machines, pay attention to your surroundings and watch for people standing nearby who may be looking over your shoulder to get your PIN.

- Place your hand over the machine when entering your pin number to shield it from any cameras that may be hidden above or mounted in such a way to get the number.

- Be aware of any hand-written out of order signs on one machine which forces you to use the other machine that may be rigged.
