Bystanders help foil daring daytime mugger

It was a case of right place, right time. Two off-duty firefighters rushed to the aid of two women who were battling a mugger in the parking lot across from Sudbury Arena on Nov. 5.

Greater Sudbury Police said the women were approached by a man at about 12:20 p.m. Saturday afternoon into the Minto Street parking lot. When he tried to steal one of the women’s purses, the other woman jumped in to fight him off.

The mugger then allegedly tried to steal one of the victim’s car keys.

It was at this point two off-duty firefighters happened along and helped the women detain the suspect until police could arrive.

The man has been charged with robbery with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and obstructing a peace officer.

The GSPS expressed appreciation for the public’s help in apprehending the man.
