Four people have been charged following an alleged assault on a Valley East taxi driver early Saturday morning.

According to police, the taxi driver picked up two men and two women on Notre Dame Ave. in Hanmer and started driving them to their destination in Capreol when one of the female passengers tried using the cab's CB radio, despite repeated warnings from the driver.

The driver then asked his passengers to leave the cab and refused to driver them any further. When the four didn't exit the taxi, the driver radioed his dispatcher to phone the police, turned the cab around and started driving towards the police station in Valley East.

Police also said that on the way to the station, one of the men sitting in the back-seat started chocking the driver with a seat belt, causing the taxi to veer into the on-coming traffic lane before coming to a stop.

When the police arrived a short time later, they placed the four under arrest, describing the group as hostile and aggressive.

The four have been charged with a number of offenses including assault with a weapon, causing a disturbance, mischief, obstructing police and resisting arrest.
