On Thursday, Feb. 21 at approximately 11:50 am, members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service were dispatched to the area of the Farmer’s Market on Elm St. where a robbery suspect was being held by concerned citizens.

Minutes earlier, witnesses heard the victim, a female in her 70’s, yell out for help after a male party had taken her purse while walking on Durham St.  A number of “good Samaritans” assisted and were involved in the foot chase.

The victim was not injured in the incident.

Police charged Ryan McMahon, 23, of no fixed address, with robbery and uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm.  McMahon is alleged to have made threats to one of the individuals involved in the apprehension.

Preventative tips:

- if you are a victim of a robbery, make yourself be heard by yelling or screaming.
to prevent injuries, robbery victims are urged not to resist or fight back.

- call police as soon as possible, providing direction of travel and description of the suspect.

- avoid carrying a lot of cash, jewelry and important documents in your purse or wallet.
