The Sudbury OPP detachment is reminding all residents that the Highway 69 extension between Sudbury and Estaire has not been opened and is still under construction, and that operating any vehicle, not just motor vehicles such as cars and trucks, is illegal.

The OPP have received several complaints of motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATV) using and racing on the paved portion of the extension.

As required by the Highway Traffic Act, "do not enter" and "road closed" signs have been posted at all access points to the new extension. Anyone found driving a vehicle on the incomplete and closed extension can be charged with driving on a closed highway and disobeying signs. Both fines are $110 each and three demerit points.

Those using an ATV on any highway, open or closed, can also be charged with unlawfully driving an off-road vehicle on a highway, as well as driving an off-road vehicle - no insurance.

The police are also reminding residents that vehicle insurance is nullified while driving on closed roads, so any accidents that occur will not be covered by insurance.
