The Ontario Provincial Police is targetting aggressive commercial truck drivers and unsafe commercial vehicles during a 24-hour campaign, which began at 6 a.m. June 17 along Highway 17 in the Sudbury and Espanola areas.

During last year’s Operation Corridor initiative, OPP officers in the Northeast Region stopped 1,254 vehicles, laid 34 charges, including 18 for speeding, two seatbelt charges, five equipment related charges, three charges for following too close, six charges for “Other Hazardous Moving Violations” and one criminal code charge.

Two tractor-trailers were taken out-of-service during the 24-hour province-wide initiative.  Locally, Sudbury and Espanola OPP and MTO officers stopped and checked a total of 35 commercial motor vehicles and laid six charges (three for speeding and three documentation related charges).

Operation Corridor is an annual border-to-border highway safety initiative that focuses on high visibility, enforcement and education opportunities on provincial highways.

Commercial carriers are among the safest drivers on the road; however when they are involved in collisions the results are usually more serious as is the impact on the economy and highway delays, according to a release put out by the OPP.

Officers will concentrate their enforcement on commercial vehicle speed and moving violation safety.  They will also be checking these vehicles to identify unsafe units and those not meeting emission standards and, if appropriate, take them off the road.
