UPDATE - The victim of the crash has been identified as 67-year-old Geza Virth. The Ontario Provincial Police are advising that there was no fire as a result of a collision.

Highway 17 west of Whitefish is has re-opened to traffic after a fatal collision involving a small car and a tractor trailer this morning (April 7) at 6 a.m.

The driver of the car, who was killed in the crash, was driving westbound on Highway 17. At the same time, a tractor trailer was also travelling westbound on Highway 17, following the car.

The driver of the car slowed and pulled to the side of Highway 17 at Fairbanks Road. The driver then accelerated back onto the highway before the tractor trailer caught up to him and continued westbound on the highway for about 1.5 kilometres.

The driver of the car then slowed down and pulled onto the shoulder of the road. The tractor trailer, seeing the car pulling onto the shoulder, went into the eastbound lane to pass the car because there was no eastbound traffic.

The car then started to make a u-turn in front of the tractor trailer when both vehicles collided in the eastbound lane.

At the time of the collision the roads were bare and wet, and visibility was listed as good. The investigation is ongoing.

The OPP is not releasing any information about the victim pending notification of family, although they said the driver of the tractor trailer is a man.
