Elliot Lake man killed in single-vehicle collision on Hwy. 17

The Ontario Provincial Police have identified the man killed in a single-vehicle collision on Highway 17 as Donald James McDonell, 24, of Elliot Lake.

A man was killed June 29 after the vehicle he was driving left the roadway on Highway 17 near the Vermillion River Bridge, said the Ontario Provincial Police.

The man, whose name is not being released pending notification of next of kin, was the lone occupant.

Preliminary investigation revealed his vehicle left the road, hit a rock cut and rolled over. The man was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing his seatbelt, said police.

Police responded to the call at 11:45 p.m An OPP collision reconstructionist and technical traffic collision investigator attended the scene and are assisting with the investigation.

The westbound lanes of Highway 17 were closed until 5 a.m. while officers completed their investigation.
