Evading RIDE check in stolen truck nets multiple charges

The suspect was also allegedly impaired, carrying drug paraphernalia and had large knife in the truck

An attempt to evade a RIDE check in a stolen truck has resulted in multiple charges for a 39-year-old man.

Around 10:10 p.m. March 17, officers from the Greater Sudbury Police Traffic Management Unit and Patrol Operations Division were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check on Bancroft Drive in Greater Sudbury when officers saw the driver of a dark pick-up truck intentionally attempt to evade the spot check.

Upon seeing the police cruisers and officers, the driver made an abrupt stop by entering a driveway, waiting a short period of time, and then backing out of the driveway to travel in the opposite direction, away from the RIDE check.

Officers travelled in the same direction of the truck to conduct a traffic stop. Upon locating the vehicle, officers activated emergency lights and sirens, however, the driver of the vehicle did not pull over and continued to drive erratically, travelling at a high rate of speed, swerving across both lanes of traffic, and bouncing off the curb. In the interest of public safety, officers disengaged the vehicle that was last seen traveling on Howey Drive.

Just before 10:30 p.m., members of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) saw the vehicle making a turn onto Morris Street. Officers located the vehicle unoccupied with the driver’s door open on Marshall Lane.

Due to the fresh snow, officers tracked the footprints to a parking lot on Van Horne Street where the driver was found hiding.

The individual was placed under arrest and upon searching him, officers located drug paraphernalia. He was transported to police headquarters where he failed to identify himself, despite being given multiple opportunities to do so.

Officers were able to identify the individual through a police database and while searching the database, officers discovered that he was subject to the following driving prohibitions, including:

Prohibited Drive, Canada-Wide, because of a conviction for Dangerous Drive
Suspended Drive, Province-Wide, for Unpaid Fines
Suspended Drive, Province-Wide, because of Fail to Stop
Suspended Drive, Province-Wide, because of a Dangerous Drive
Suspended Drive, Province-Wide, because of a Fail to Stop

The individual was brought before a Drug Recognition Expert so that the officer could complete a Drug Recognition Evaluation, however, the individual refused to complete the evaluation.

Officers also discovered that the truck the individual was driving at the time of the incident had been reported stolen and that there was a large knife in the vehicle.
